2023 Palindrome: Back to Hope

This exhibition presents Massachusetts painter Andrae Green's deeply personal exploration of memory, longing, and the transformative power of water. Drawing from his childhood in Jamaica, where the ever-present Caribbean Sea served as both comfort and constant, Green's latest body of work emerges from the profound sense of loss he feels living in western Massachusetts, far from the ocean that once defined his world. His paintings capture the "limitless potential for human imagination and freedom" through vivid depictions of diving figures and Caribbean landscapes, while his drawings explore themes of weightlessness and liberation. Inspired by memories of fearless young boys leaping from Kingston Harbor docks into the sea's depths, Green's work embodies the complex relationship Caribbean people have with the ocean—one that "brings both joy and fear, love and hate, hope and resentment." This exhibition offers viewers a chance to experience Green's artistic meditation on displacement, belonging, and the ways in which our most formative landscapes continue to shape our creative expression long after we've left them behind.
